In 2006, Sgt. Major Jesse Acosta was serving in Iraq when he was permanently blinded in a mortar attack. Upon returning to the U.S., Acosta discovered that the VA in Palo Alto, California wouldn’t pay for the surgeries required to repair his injuries. Instead, the VA gave him prescriptions for a multitude of narcotics to dull the pain.
