Dan Bongino said he is certain that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report will demonstrate that the whole Russia investigation was a "hoax" from the start, but that won't stop anti-President Trump attacks from the media and Democrats.

On "Fox & Friends" Thursday, Bongino, a Fox News contributor, said he has long known that there was "zero" evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, and he believes Mueller realized the same thing when he took over the investigation in May 2017.

"So Mueller -- in their effort to keep an investigation open into Trump, to damage his presidency -- has to keep this thing open. He can't just come out on day two and say, 'Hey, ladies, gents, this is a big fraud," Bongino said. "So what do they do? They get a gray area, discretionary crime: obstruction."

He noted that the investigation ran for nearly 700 days, which he said was a "disgrace."

"There was no reason for this to stay open that long," he stated.

As for the media and Democrats' criticism of Attorney General William Barr's handling of the Mueller report, Bongino said they have shown they are "not serious people" and are desperate to find anything to discredit the president.

"They missed the two biggest stories of our generation," Bongino said. "They missed the fact that collusion was a hoax and spying was real. They got the story backwards."
