Democrat Jessica Tarlov said on "Outnumbered" Monday that progressives should listen to former President Barack Obama's warning against creating a "circular firing squad" in the party.

At an Obama Foundation town hall event in Berlin, Obama said many on the left must realize they will not get everything they want in policy debates with the more moderate members of the party.

"The way we structure democracy requires you to take into account people who don’t agree with you. And that by definition means you're not going to get 100 percent of what you want," he told the audience.

"One of the things I do worry about sometimes among progressives ... we start sometimes creating what’s called a 'circular firing squad,' where you start shooting at your allies because one of them has strayed from purity on the issues."

Tarlov said many moderate Democrats are scared of so-called "purity tests" coming from far-left Democrats and organizations.

Last week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) recommended to her 3.8 million Twitter followers that they "pause" their donations to the party's main fundraising body. It came after the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said it will not work with pollsters and consultants who work for challengers to incumbents.

"There is no reason to be tearing down infrastructure that supports Democratic candidates," Tarlov responded.

The Wall Street Journal's James Freeman said Obama understands how he got elected twice and it was not with a "sharp," left-wing message. He said voters will have trouble in 2020 if the Democratic nominee supports proposals like the Green New Deal and Medicare-for-All.
