National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd said Border Patrol agents are "behind the eight ball" because they aren't getting what they need from Congress.

On Fox Nation's "My Take" Monday, Judd said caravans of migrants are arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border at "strategic locations," and they are "overwhelming our resources."

He noted that U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said 40 percent of the agency's personnel are working on processing migrants, which McAleenan said detracts from their "primary border security mission."

Judd said the real number, however, is even more troubling.

"Commissioner McAleenan said 40 percent of our resources are in processing. That's true overall, but 65 percent of our resources that are eligible to be deployed are actually in processing," Judd said. "So we barely have any of our resources out in the field."

He noted that Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen wants to redeploy up to 2,000 CBP officers from ports of entry to sectors along the border to assist Border Patrol agents.

"It's a brilliant idea, and it will help out an awful lot," Judd said. "And that's where we're talking about going toward shutting down the ports of entry, because if we don't have the officers at the ports of entry to work it, you have to shut them down."

As for President Trump's threat to close the southern border if Mexico does not “immediately stop” the surge of illegal immigrants flooding into the U.S., Judd said he "highly encourages" the president to take that action.

"He would be doing it for an absolute security reason that's facing this nation," Judd said. "Yes, we'll take a short-term [economic] hit, but in the long run, we'll be a lot better off."
