Rep. Andy Biggs said Democrats are in "denial" about the crisis at the southern border, and that means that "Congress is not doing anything" to address the ongoing emergency.

He noted that Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen issued a dire assessment earlier this month, telling a House committee that illegal immigration is “spiraling out of control” and predicting the crisis will “get even worse” in the coming months.

"We're dealing with a party that controls the House right now, they don't want to do anything on the border," Biggs said. "They continue to argue that this is a manufactured crisis, that there is no crisis."

Biggs revealed that in the coming weeks, he is bringing several of his Republican colleagues with him to tour the southern border and get a firsthand look at how real the crisis is.

"The reality is, we're dealing with a party that says, 'There is no crisis. Not only is there no crisis, there's not even a problem, this is created,'" Biggs said. "That kind of denial just can't on, because this is gonna grow and grow."

As for the looming legal battle over President Trump declaring a national emergency at the border, Biggs agreed with Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) that the president has the constitutional authority to use executive power to address the crisis.

The declaration is an effort by Trump to divert several billion dollars appropriated for other projects toward the construction of his long-promised border wall.

"The commander-in-chief has authority under the Constitution and elsewhere in the statutes," Biggs said. "We've delegated authority for him to spend the money on something like border fencing."

Trump used the first veto of his administration Friday after the Republican-controlled Senate voted 59-41 to block the emergency declaration.
