Historian and author Victor Davis Hanson pegged President Trump's re-election chances at about 55 percent in an interview on Fox Nation.
Speaking with Greg Gutfeld on "One Smart Person," Hanson was asked whether he believes Trump can defeat the Democratic nominee in 2020.
Gutfeld conceded that it's early and it's still unclear who will emerge from the crowded Democratic field, but Hanson said Hillary Clinton looks like a "centrist" compared to the policies being proposed by Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)
Hanson, author of the new book The Case for Trump, said the main reason for his prediction is the "stark alternative" likely to be put forth by the left. He said the Trump administration appears to be running smoother after the appointments of Attorney General Bill Barr, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton.
He also said the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller appears unlikely to produce a conclusion that will warrant impeachment.
"All of that which hasn't killed him made him stronger. People are starting to say, 'Ya know what, whatever he is, he doesn't quit and they haven't really tagged him as they thought they would," said Hanson.
