House Minority Leader McCarthy: 'Adam Schiff Is a Modern-Day Joe McCarthy'
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) described top Democrat Adam Schiff as a "a modern-day Joe McCarthy" in an interview on "Hannity."
Rep. McCarthy said Schiff, the House Intelligence Committee chairman, has "met his own standard" for recusal and should not participate in any Trump-Russia investigations going forward.
"These are questions he needs to answer," said McCarthy, bringing up Schiff's contacts with Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson, whose firm was hired by the Democratic Party and the Clinton campaign to investigate Trump's Russia ties, eventually producing the Steele dossier.
He also questioned what was discussed between Michael Cohen and Schiff prior to last week's closed-door Intelligence Committee hearing.
"Now I’m not related to Joe McCarthy, but Adam Schiff is a modern-day Joe McCarthy, somebody who claims something and never has delivered. But the one thing he has delivered on: protecting Fusion GPS," McCarthy argued, accusing Schiff of trying to hide the fact that Democrats paid for the dossier.
He questioned why Schiff claimed to have "proof and evidence" of Russian collusion before the committee's investigation started.
Schiff made headlines Sunday when he said he believes there is "direct evidence" of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russians in 2016.
"That is something that we will have to await Bob Mueller's report and the underlying evidence to determine. We will also have to look at the whole body of improper and criminal actions by the president including those campaign finance crimes to determine whether they rise to the level of removal from office," said Schiff.
