In his opening statement before Michael Cohen's public testimony on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Rep. Jim Jordan slammed Democrats for giving the "convicted liar" a forum.

Jordan (R-Ohio) accused House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) of holding the hearing at the behest of Cohen's counsel, Lanny Davis, a longtime Clinton loyalist.

"This first announced witness for the 116th Congress is a guy who's going to prison in two months for lying to Congress," Jordan said. "Mr. Chairman, your chairmanship will always be identified with this hearing."

He said this is the first time a "convicted perjurer" has been brought back before Congress as a "star witness."

Jordan also criticized Cummings for limiting the scope of questions that lawmakers can ask Cohen, arguing that the only questions that can be asked are ones that would do damage to the president.

"Clinton operative Lanny Davis has persuaded the chairman of the oversight committee to give a convicted felon a forum to tell stories and lie about the president of the United States, so they can all start their impeachment process," Jordan said.

"Mr. Chairman, we are better than this. We are better than this."
