In a captivating new Fox Nation special, historian James Carl Nelson revisits an often-forgotten story of the American troops who participated in an invasion of northern Russia.

The mini-documentary is based on Nelson's book, The Polar Bear Expedition: The Heroes of America’s Forgotten Invasion of Russia, 1918-1919.

Nelson, an award-winning historian, explains how a 5,000-man U.S. force, nicknamed "The Polar Bears," ended up clashing with the Soviet Union's Red Army in the last days of World War I.

More than 200 of the men, mostly from Wisconsin and Michigan, died in the campaign near the port of Archangel, suffering in temperatures as low as 60 below zero.
