Former CKE Restaurants chief Andrew Puzder said Thursday that the Green New Deal legislation is not a "new" form of socialism, but just a current version of programs instituted in the former Soviet Union.

"It really puts the lie to the notion that that kind of socialism that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders are talking about is 'new socialism,'" said Puzder, whose former company owns Hardee's and Carl's Jr. restaurants.

He said that the Green New Deal is just like one of the "old socialist five-year programs" from the U.S.S.R.

Puzder said it is very apparent that the far-left will use climate change alarmism as a cudgel to "scare" people into support for such legislation.

Puzder clarified that he was not going to enter the debate as to whether or not global warming exists.

He said that his grandfather emigrated in the 1910's from the former Austro-Hungarian Empire to America in hopes of joining a capitalist society where his family could work to elevate themselves.

Puzder, who grew up in working-class Ohio, said upward mobility is next to impossible in socialist societies like Venezuela, Cuba and the Soviet Union -- which fell in 1991.
