"Fox News Sunday" anchor Chris Wallace said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's much-touted "Green New Deal" is "totally unrealistic," and he said many top Democrats are only "paying lip service" in response.

Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) on Thursday unveiled the package of far-reaching, big-government proposals, including health care for all, federal job guarantees and a push to eliminate U.S. carbon emissions.

The proposal quickly picked up the backing of major 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls including Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) -- who all co-sponsored the resolution.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi initially said she hadn't seen the "green dream" legislation, but she later said she welcomes the "enthusiasm."

"All you have to do is look at the dismissive way in which Speaker Pelosi dealt with it, and even more interestingly that she set up a climate change commission ... and didn't even put AOC on the panel, to know that this has no chance at all," Wallace said on "America's Newsroom" Friday.

He said many in the Democratic base may support the deal, but party leaders have little interest in doing more than "paying lip service."

"Frankly, a lot of it is totally unrealistic, because you heard the idea of banning air travel or retrofitting every building in America in ten years," Wallace said.

"An effort to actually enact the Green New Deal in the next year or two would be politically disastrous and would bankrupt the country. Other than that, it's a heck of a good idea."
