Syndicated columnist and author Michelle Malkin said Sunday that embattled Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's press conference about a racist photo featured in his 1984 medical school year book resembled a slow-motion political meltdown.

Northam (D) is facing mounting calls to resign after he initially admitted to appearing in a decades-old racist photo in the yearbook, but then backtracked that claim.

The photo featured two people, one dressed in a Ku Klux Klan hood and another in blackface. Northam had claimed to be one of the men in the photo before denying being either.

Malkin said on Fox & Friends that the governor's press conference on the matter Saturday was an implosion not seen since the Hindenburg disaster of 1937.

"The press conference was cringe-worthy to the extreme," she said, noting a point at which a reporter asked Northam if he could still moonwalk.

Northam mentioned Saturday that he'd once painted his face "as part of a Michael Jackson costume," but that he was not the man with the darkened face in the photo in question.

Malkin said that the larger point to note in the situation are the "weird and screwed-up priorities of Democrats and liberals in the media."

She pointed out how Northam had been previously scrutinized over his support for a bill that would repeal restrictions on third-trimester abortions.

"That wasn't enough to break through into the national media," she said. "It was bizzaro pictures from a yearbook ... what does that tell you?"

Ed Henry noted how days before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) tweeted her condemnation of the yearbook photo, she side-stepped a question from Fox News' Chad Pergram about Northam's remarks on the abortion bill.

"This is the leader of the Democrat Party who thinks that border walls and sovereignty are 'immoral,' who has now jumped the moral bandwagon on a yearbook photo from 40 years ago," she said.

Malkin added that President Trump was right when he tweeted that Democrats' priorities are late-term abortion and open borders.
