'He's Fresh Off an Ethics Scandal': Watters Says Media Should Focus on Menendez, Dems' PR Trip With Lobbyists, Not Trump
In the midst of the partial government shutdown, nearly three dozen Democratic lawmakers attended a Congressional Hispanic Caucus event in Puerto Rico where they rubbed elbows with lobbyists and took in the sunshine.
New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez was featured in one well-circulated image, showing him shirtless on the beach in conversation with a bikini-clad woman.
Jesse Watters reported that President Trump remained in chilly Washington amid the tropical festivities.
"I've been here all weekend. A lot of the Democrats were in Puerto Rico celebrating something," Trump said.
The Puerto Rico festivities featured lobbyists from Winston-Salem, N.C.-based tobacco giant R.J. Reynolds, as well as Facebook, Amazon, Verizon and a national teachers union.
Watters suggested that instead of looking into allegations against President Trump, and whether he should take the blame for the shutdown, the public should instead keep an eye on Menendez.
"[There's] Senator Menendez from New Jersey, shirtless, out by the beach. You know he's getting all lotioned up, getting the daiquiris flowing... He's fresh off an ethics scandal here," Watters said.
Last year, Menendez' federal corruption trial in Newark ended in a hung jury. He was accused of accepting bribes from a wealthy Florida ophthalmologist, Dr. Salomon Melgen, in exchange for political favors. The senator has denied any wrongdoing.
