Former Acting ICE Director Tom Homan slammed congressional Democrats on Sunday for failing to address loopholes in U.S. immigration laws.

His remarks come after the deaths of two child migrants while in government custody, and a California police officer who was allegedly shot by an illegal immigrant with ties to a street gang.

Homan said on "Fox & Friends" that such tragedies could have been prevented.

"They own part of this issue," he said. "And before they start asking to investigate the fine men and women of Border Patrol who did everything they can to save their lives, they need to look in the mirror.

Homan also blasted top Democrats in California like Sens. Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for supporting sanctuary city policies within their state.

He said that he was vocal over Senate Bill 54, which limits cooperation between state and local authorities and ICE, and said that it would cause safety issues.

"The president said the same thing. [Outgoing California Gov.] Jerry Brown stood on stage and said the administration's lying, Trump's lying, Homan's lying. [State Senate President Pro Tem] Kevin de Leon said we're lying. But we weren't," Homan added.

He added that the state's Sheriff's Association was strongly opposed to the signing of SB 54.
