The dramatic story of the mysterious 1969 death of Mary Jo Kopechne concluded on the season finale of "Scandalous: Chappaquiddick
Last week on Episode 3 of the hit docu-series, narrator Bruce McGill took us through the chaotic aftermath of the late-night car accident that threw Sen. Ted Kennedy's political career into turmoil.
With an inquest behind him, Kennedy tried to push past the controversy and decide if he should run for president. Then-President Richard Nixon used Chappaquiddick as a weapon to keep Kennedy at bay, but was soon crippled by a scandal of his own -- the bungled break-in at the Watergate hotel that would eventually doom his presidency.
On Episode 4, "Stranger Than Fiction," Kennedy is still serving as the senior senator from Massachusetts, 40 years after his car was found in the waters off Chappaquiddick, and is known by his colleagues as "The Lion Of The Senate." He develops a brain tumor and soon passes away—taking with him the only true first-hand knowledge of what really happened on the night of Kopechne’s death.
In the decades since the accident, the lack of concrete answers about the events leading up to and directly following the crash spawned a cottage industry of competing conspiracy theories. The speculation and theories of varying degrees of credibility all try to fill the void left by Kennedy’s continued silence and shifting stories of the fateful night’s events.
In the four-episode presentation of Scandalous: Chappaquiddick, the riveting story has been told from the perspective of many of those involved, along with the journalists who covered it.
Using archival footage and records, never-before seen photos, as well as new interviews with those involved, the series has revisited the daily twists and turns of the drama, nearly 50 years after it first captivated the world.
