'You Thought Halloween Was Scary?': Chaffetz on What Dem-Controlled House Would Look Like
Speaker Pelosi, Chairman Waters could take over.
Former Utah congressman and Fox News contributor Jason Chaffetz said Rep. Nancy Pelosi will be House Speaker if the Democrats retake the House.
Chaffetz noted that many Democratic candidates distanced themselves from Pelosi (D-Calif.) in the lead-up to the midterm elections, but he said she will maintain her prominent role in the party.
"That's all she's been about. She wants the power back," Chaffetz said. "She will be the Speaker of the House if the Democrats take control. She will wrestle control from those people."
He pointed out that Pelosi has raised more money in the history of the U.S. Congress than anybody else, and Democrats are confident in their chances of capturing the House.
"She is a money machine, and she may pull it off, but it's up to the voters today," Chaffetz said.
He added that if Democrats take the House, that would lead to new chairs on notable House committees, including Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on the House Financial Services Committee, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) on the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) on the House Oversight Committee and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on the House Intelligence Committee.
"Democrats, the way they elect their chairmen is totally different than how the Republicans do it. They do it based on seniority, so we already know who will get those gavels," Chaffetz said.
He said those lawmakers could use their committees to investigate everything from potential impeachment of President Trump to Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation testimony to possible Russian collusion.
"It's up to voters whether they get the gavel. There's 23 seats, and if they can flip just a little bit more than 23 seats, Democrats will wrangle control from the Republicans," Chaffetz said.
