Wallace: Woodward Book, Anonymous NYT Op-Ed, Obama Speech Are '1-2-3 Punch' Combo on Trump
"Fox News Sunday" anchor Chris Wallace said if it feels like President Donald Trump is under fire, it's because he is.
Appearing on "Shepard Smith Reporting" on Friday, Wallace said recently released excerpts from veteran reporter Bob Woodward's new book, a New York Times op-ed by an anonymous senior Trump campaign official and former President Barack Obama's fiery speech are basically a "1-2-3 punch" combination on Trump.
According to The Washington Post, which obtained an early copy of Woodward's book, the veteran reporter's work portrays a chaotic Trump White House filled with second-guessing by members of Trump’s staff, who repeatedly bad-mouth him behind closed doors.
That narrative was furthered in a Wednesday Times piece titled "I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration," in which the author claimed to be part of a "resistance" working "from within" to "frustrate parts of [Trump's] agenda and his worst inclinations."
And then on Friday, Obama stepped back into the political fray in an address at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, strongly criticizing Trump and the Republican Party.
Wallace said Obama took some "unusually powerful shots" at Trump, which is rare to see from a former president toward a sitting president.
In his speech, Obama accused Trump of "capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years.”
Obama also said Trump is attempting to use the Justice Department as a “cudgel” to punish his political opponents and protect Republican lawmakers ahead of November's midterm elections.
"It's not just this one speech. He's going to be on the campaign trail," Wallace said. "He will energize the Democratic base, just like Donald Trump when he goes to North Dakota or Montana -- as he has this week -- energizes Republican voters."
