'It's Really Quite Disgusting': Shapiro Slams Attacks on Pence's Christian Faith
Calls out 'militant secularism' of the left.
Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro slammed "disgusting" attacks on Vice President Mike Pence's devout Christian faith during an appearance on "Fox News @ Night" on Thursday.
In the new book “The Shadow President: The Truth About Mike Pence,” authors Michael D’Antonio and Peter Eisner argue that Pence is “the most successful Christian supremacist in American history" and that a Pence presidency could mean the United States becoming a theocracy.
New York Times columnist Frank Bruni wrote a flattering preview of the book titled "Mike Pence, Holy Terror."
"There are problems with impeaching Donald Trump. A big one is the holy terror waiting in the wings," Bruni wrote. "That would be Mike Pence, who mirrors the boss more than you realize. He’s also self-infatuated. Also a bigot. Also a liar. Also cruel."
Host Shannon Bream noted that former White House aide Omarosa Manigault-Newman unloaded on Pence in her tell-all book, writing that the people who are wishing for Trump's impeachment would be "begging" for a return to the days of Trump if Pence became president.
Bream also noted that "The View" co-hosts openly mocked Pence's Christian faith earlier this year, with Joy Behar likening his beliefs to "mental illness." After a significant backlash, Behar eventually apologized.
Shapiro argued that there is a baseline level of "hatred" for Christians from the cultural left.
"There's this belief that everybody who deeply believes their faith is actually secretly a bigot, that the reason they are acting out their religion in public is not because they believe their religion, but because they are using their religion as a cover for bigotry," he said.
He added that's clearly not true, and all it does is demonstrate the "militant secularism of the left."
"The only theocrats, the only people who actually want to rule from above by instituting their moral preferences on society from the top down are the folks on the left," Shapiro said, arguing that they are projecting their own theocratic tendencies toward government onto Pence.
"It's really quite disgusting."
