Former Acting ICE Director and new Fox News contributor Tom Homan said on "Fox & Friends" on Wednesday that the murder of Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts is a tragic reminder of the importance of enforcing border control and immigration law.

Cristhian Rivera, a 24-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of the 20-year-old Tibbetts, who was reported missing more than a month ago.

Homan said some Democratic lawmakers -- such as Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo -- don’t want to enforce immigration law.

"This is why we need a wall. This is why we need to fix the loopholes," Homan said. "I'm sick and tired of talking about this issue and meeting yet another 'Angel Mom' that's been created at the hands of an illegal alien. We've got to stop politicizing this issue and fix it once and for all."

Homan noted that Rivera, who worked as a farmhand at Yarrabee Farms for the past several years, did not have a known criminal history other than entering the country illegally.

"Folks say, 'Well, you need to concentrate on just the criminals and forget about everybody else.' Here's somebody who was 'everybody else,'" Homan said.

He said immigration officials should prioritize apprehending illegal immigrant criminals who pose a threat to public safety, but that doesn't mean all other illegal immigrants are free to stay.

"We need to enforce the laws in a meaningful way against all of them. We've still got to prioritize. But just because you don't commit another crime in this country doesn't mean we should look the other way," Homan said.
