The wife of George Papadopoulos, a former Trump campaign aide who pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents, said former FBI Director James Comey is spreading lies about her husband.

Papadopoulos was charged with making false statements to federal investigators and is currently awaiting sentencing.

Simona Mangiante Papadopoulos said she is certain he did not have any contact with Russians during the 2016 campaign.

"One of the reasons I am here tonight... is to set the record straight about George," she said.

She ripped Comey's assertion that George tried to obtain emails damaging to Hillary Clinton, saying "his statement is completely false."

Mrs. Papadopoulos said George was indeed approached by a Maltese professor but instead of it being a substantive discussion with ties to Russia, she said it was a "gossip conversation" that her husband voluntarily reported to the FBI.

She called the entire situation "very frustrating" and hopes that if George is imprisoned, President Donald Trump will pardon him.
