Former Mexican President Vicente Fox fired back at President Donald Trump for challenging America's southern neighbor to intervene after news that a "caravan" of Honduran nationals is transiting through the country toward the U.S.

"Mexico is doing very little, if not nothing at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their southern border and then into the US," Trump tweeted.

"[Mexico] laugh[s] at our dumb immigration laws. They must stop the big drug and people flows, or I will stop their cash cow, NAFTA. [We] need [a] wall," he said.

John Roberts reported that a group called "Pueblos Sin Fronteras" (People Without Borders) is moving a "caravan" of immigrants through Mexico, with the United States as their destination.

Roberts said Trump is threatening to use NAFTA negotiations as a way to lean on Mexico to take corrective action against the northward flow of illegals.

Fox, 75, said NAFTA is a "trademark for progress and success" and added that Trump is trying to make America isolationist.

Trump said the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program instituted by President Obama is "dead" after Democratic lawmakers "did not care or act" to fix it.

Fox, who served as president from 2000 to 2006, ripped Trump for appearing to blame Mexico for not intercepting the large group of illegal immigrants, saying he is "blackmail[ing]... Mexico and the Mexicans."

"It is absolutely infamous what [Trump] does to Mexican DREAMers," he tweeted in Spanish, adding that Trump is "acting like a spoiled child" and said he and Congress are "destroying the American dream."

"You ignited the flame of hate and fear all across the nation," Fox said. "Stop the Twitter threats. Drugs will keep pouring into the U.S. as long as people consume them."
