Secretary of Defense James Mattis met President Trump's new national security adviser, John Bolton, at the Pentagon Thursday afternoon, and he broke the ice with a joke.

"It's good to finally meet you," Mattis said as the two walked up the steps of the Pentagon. "I heard you're actually the devil incarnate, and I wanted to meet you."

Bolton responded by laughing as they entered the building.

Who Is James Mattis? 5 Things to Know About the Defense Secretary

Mattis is known for his sometimes colorful rhetoric. He once reportedly advised U.S. Marines, "Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet."

In an interview on CBS' "Face the Nation," host John Dickerson asked Mattis, "What keeps you awake at night?"

He quickly responded, "Nothing. I keep other people awake at night."

Trump announced on Twitter last week that Bolton, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, would replace Gen. H.R. McMaster as national security adviser effective April 9.

"It's obviously a great honor. It's always an honor to serve our country, and I think particularly in these times internationally," Bolton told Martha MacCallum on "The Story" after the news broke.
