Jason Chaffetz, a Fox News contributor and former Utah congressman, said President Donald Trump's public criticism of Attorney General Jeff Sessions is "mind-boggling" and "almost embarrassing."

Trump on Wednesday took to Twitter to blast Sessions for tapping an “Obama guy” to investigate allegations of government surveillance abuse.

The president was reacting to Sessions revealing a day earlier that the Justice Department’s inspector general will investigate the allegations, in light of memos released on Capitol Hill about FBI and DOJ efforts to obtain FISA warrants to spy on a former Trump campaign adviser.

"Attorney General Sessions is a 'Trump guy,'" Chaffetz said on "America's Newsroom." "He's the one that nominated him, he's the one that appointed him."

Chaffetz has said repeatedly that he does not believe Sessions is up to the job, but he argued it's "almost embarrassing" for Trump bash Sessions on Twitter, rather than talk to him directly.

"It's kind of mind-boggling that he would call out his own attorney general. He was the one that appointed him. If he's not up to the job, get rid of him," Chaffetz said.

He added he believes Sessions made the right call to bring in Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz, who he described as "wholly competent."
