VIDEO: Police Place Suspected Florida School Shooter Under Arrest

DEVELOPING: More Than 20 Victims Reported in Florida High School Shooting

Florida Sen. Bill Nelson reacted to the school shooting in his home state on "Shepard Smith Reporting" on Wednesday.

Early reports said several fatalities occurred at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

"Our heart goes out to the families of the students of the school. They're grieving," Nelson, a native of nearby Miami, said.

"It's a bad day, Shepard," the Democratic lawmaker told Smith.

Smith asked what Nelson and his fellow legislators could do to prevent this from happening in the future.

Nelson said he lamented the fact that Congress could not pass a resolution prohibiting members of the terror watch list from purchasing high-caliber weapons.

Nelson said he hopes parents are able to make contact with their children as soon as possible and added he was praying for those families who will not reunited with their kin.

He told Smith the FBI is on-site and that he spoke with a local undersheriff to remain abreast of the developing situation.
