White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders is hopeful Democrats will agree to a long-term budget deal to avoid a government shutdown before Friday's deadline.

On "Fox & Friends," Sanders said it needs to be a "clean" budget bill and remain separate from any action on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

The Obama-era program shields from deportation hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants -- commonly called Dreamers -- who were brought to the U.S. as children.

Republicans have accused Democrats of holding up budget talks in order to secure long-term protections for those in the U.S. under DACA.

"We hope that the Democrats will not hold the American military hostage, will not hold the funding of our government hostage over a political battle that we should have, but we shouldn't have it connected to the budget," Sanders said.

She said she hopes Republicans and Democrats can reach an agreement on a budget deal and then come to a compromise on immigration, DACA and border security.

She lamented, however, that Democrats seem to be putting their party before their country.

"I think Democrats don't want to see this president be successful," Sanders said.

She added that Trump remains committed to reaching a deal on immigration, but he won't agree to a bad deal.

"This is a president who wants to see something done, but he wants to see it done right," Sanders said.

"He doesn't want to sign something just for the sake of signing something. He wants to sign something that actually makes our country better, makes our country stronger and makes our country safer."
