Rep. Peter King thinks the worst thing President Trump could do in the Russia investigation is remove Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

"Not because he's doing such a great job, but the president's lawyers are confident this is going in the right direction," King (R-N.Y.) said on "Sunday Morning Futures." "I don't want to give the Democrats, the media an opportunity to blow this up and come up with another phony issue."

King acknowledged that there have been mistakes in Mueller's probe into Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and it has become tiresome to see so many Trump associates called in to be interviewed by Mueller's team.

King, who was present for Donald Trump Jr.'s recent interview with the House Intelligence Committee, said there is still no evidence of any collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.

“Nobody listening to that interview could come out of that thinking there was any collusion at all. This is totally phony, but I don't want to give them a chance to talk about another 'Saturday Night Massacre,'" King said, referring to Richard Nixon's 1973 firing of a special prosecutor and the resignation of his attorney general during the Watergate scandal.

King added that another special counsel could step in and drag the investigation out even longer.

"I think it's better to just go along with it right now and get it wrapped up and over and done with," he said.
