Americans are transfixed this afternoon with the first total solar eclipse since 1979 and the First Family is no exception.

President Trump, First Lady Melania and their son, Barron, stepped onto the Truman Balcony, donning special glasses, to take a look at the partial eclipse that was visible in the nation's capital.

At one point, the president looked up without his protective glasses, prompting someone below to yell out "don't look!"

Trump will address the nation tonight at 9:00pm ET on the Afghanistan war.

Jimmy Carter was president on the day of the last total solar eclipse, Feb. 26, 1979. The gap until the next one in the U.S. isn't nearly as long, coming on April 8, 2024.

The Bush family, including both former presidents, took in the eclipse as well today.
