Krauthammer: Donald Jr. Story 'First Empirical Evidence' of Collusion

In the wake of reports about Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer, the media has had strong criticism for the president's son, including some conservative outlets.

Trump Jr. met in June 2016 with attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya, who claimed to have information damaging to Hillary Clinton.

Although Trump Jr. maintains nothing came from the brief meeting, he has been criticized for meeting with a Russian government lawyer in an attempt to help his father's presidential campaign.

The New York Post editorial board wrote a piece calling Trump Jr. an "idiot." The National Review's David French called out Trump Jr., not only for the meeting but for an "avalanche of denials and evasions." And the Washington Examiner's Quin Hillyer went so far as to say "President Trump should forfeit his office" over the Russia saga.

On "The Story" tonight, Newt Gingrich this is all "fevered insanity," and he said everyone should dial down their rhetoric.

He acknowledged that it wasn't a good idea for Trump Jr. to take the meeting in the first place, but he pointed out that nothing emerged from the conversation and there's nothing illegal about it.

"You have a totally one-sided, anti-Trump story hyped up with a level of hysteria that I think historians will look back on and think that this was like the Salem witchcraft trials," Gingrich said.

He said the news media is in a "frenzy," which is leading it to desperately seek any possible evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

"Every time something comes up, they grossly exaggerate it, the Democrats pick up the exaggeration, then the news media picks up the Democrats, and we get up in what I think is the equivalent of hysteria," he concluded.
