Newt Gingrich thinks the new reports from The New York Times and The Washington Post about the ongoing investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia are "garbage."

On "The Story" tonight, Gingrich pointed out that neither story cites any sources by name, and he said they're intended purely to "smear" President Trump.

"And yet, these are 'bombshells'? No, they're not. They're just more of the left-wing hatred for Trump," Gingrich said.

He explained that it's been known for some time that Trump wanted to fire former FBI Director James Comey, so it's not major, breaking news that he shared his intention with Russian officials during a classified conversation, as the Times reported.

Gingrich noted a recent Harvard University study that found that 80 percent of the media's coverage of Trump's first 100 days was negative.

"There is more media hostility to Donald Trump than any president in modern American history," Gingrich said. "Tonight's another example."

He said that the media should be focused on Trump's "historic" nine-day, five-country foreign trip.

"Oh, no. They come up with garbage, in order to smear the president as he leaves the country," Gingrich said. "I think it's disgusting. And I'm really sad that The Washington Post and The New York Times have ceased to be newspapers, and purely become left-wing propaganda instruments."
