Multiple injuries have been reported in Gulf Shores, Ala., after a vehicle plowed into a marching band during Tuesday's Mardi Gras parade.

City spokesman Grant Brown told local media that the parade has been canceled following the incident.

Early reports from WKRG say an SUV struck the band from behind, leaving 12 high school students injured, four critically. All were taken to local hospitals.

Authorities said they have no reason to believe this was anything more than an unfortunate accident.

News of this accident comes amid recent crashes at a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans and the Carnival parade in Rio de Janeiro.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for further details.
