Trump: Dem Senator Praised Sessions Privately, But Won't Support Him Because of 'Politics'
During a White House listening session with several county sheriffs from around the nation, President Trump said a Democratic senator told him he admired Attorney General Nominee Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), but cannot vote for him for political reasons.
The senator told Trump that Sessions "is a fantastic man" and "a friend", but added that "politics doesn't allow" him to vote to confirm him
Repeating his dismay at the absence of an official attorney general in his cabinet, Trump said Acting Attorney General Dana Boente of Virginia is "excellent representation" in the meantime.
He said Senate Democrats broke a "record" for the length of a cabinet confirmation delay.
Responding to praise from Sheriff Bunny Welsh of Chester County, Pa., outside of Philadelphia, Trump said "there's a new sheriff in town.
Welsh thanked Trump for being a strong supporter of law enforcement, noting that she and her colleagues are elected by the people as Trump was.
Trump said Homeland Security Secretary Gen. John Kelly will work with the sheriffs to stem the flow of drugs from the Mexican borderlands and will seek consultation on how best to erect the border wall.
