A large majority of American voters believe they have achieved the American Dream or it’s within sight for their family, according to a new Fox News poll.

40 percent of those polled said their family has achieved the American Dream, while 43 percent said it's within reach.

Only 15 percent feel it’s "out of reach."

The poll asked what defines the American Dream for people today.

88 percent responded "retiring comfortably" and 76 percent said "having a successful career."

"Raising a family" and "contributing to a community" each got 74 percent, while "owning a home" got 69 percent.

"These responses are consistent with those we’ve seen in the past," Republican Pollster Daron Shaw, who conducts the Fox News Poll along with Democrat Chris Anderson, told FoxNews.com. "Even during relatively dark times - and even as the country has polarized politically - we tend to believe things will improve and our children will be better off than we are."

The Fox News poll is based on landline and cell phone interviews with 1,006 randomly chosen registered voters nationwide
