Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich joined "Fox & Friends" Thursday to discuss the nearly 70 Democratic members of Congress choosing to skip Friday's inauguration.

He called the actions of these members of Congress "childish and silly."

"The inauguration is not about Republicans. It's not about Donald Trump. The inauguration is about America. Why would you abandon America?" the 2012 GOP presidential candidate said.

Gingrich recalled attending inaugurations of both Republicans and Democrats alike.

"It doesn't matter which team wins," he said. "We are a naturally optimistic country. I went to two Obama inaugurals feeling positive about the future. I went to Clinton inaugurals."

Gingrich said he fondly remembers Ronald Reagan's inauguration and also said Reagan would not be happy with the Democrats skipping the inauguration.

"All they're doing is making themselves look small and silly," he said.
