Michael Morell, former acting director of the CIA, says that Russia's meddling in the U.S. presidential election is a major threat to our democracy and national security.

The Washington Post reported last week that a secret CIA assessment concluded that Russia intervened in the election with the intention of helping President-elect Donald Trump defeat Hillary Clinton.

Morell said this is an attack on our very democracy and who we are as a people.

“A foreign government messing around in our elections is, I think, an existential threat to our way of life. To me, and this is to me not an overstatement, this is the political equivalent of 9/11,” Morell said in an interview posted Sunday on The Cipher Brief. “It is huge and the fact that it hasn’t gotten more attention from the Obama administration, Congress, and the mainstream media, is just shocking to me.”
