Colin Kaepernick was met with a thunderous chorus of boos in Miami on Sunday after he praised Fidel Castro.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback led his team onto the field to face the Dolphins just two days after the death of the Cuban dictator.
In an interview with Miami media last week, Kaepernick defended wearing a t-shirt that featured Castro's image and praised his commitment to education and criminal justice reform.
Miami is home to a large community of Cuban exiles and they were outraged over Kaepernick's comments about the man they considered a brutal oppressor.
Kaepernick has emerged as one of the most outspoken athletes in sports after he decided to take a knee during the national anthem before NFL games to voice concerns over police violence in America.
The game itself came down to the last play, when Kaepernick was stopped at the goal line by Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso, a Cuban-American.
Alonso admitted there was some "bad blood" between he and Kaepernick over the Castro comments.
"There were some feelings on my part,” Alonso told the Miami Herald. “I didn’t [see what happened in Cuba first-hand]. But I do have feelings about it. So there was some bad blood there for me with Kaepernick."
The 49ers' defeat was the 10th consecutive loss for the team, the worst losing streak in its history.
