Police in Gainesville, Texas, are searching for three teen suspects who wore clown masks during a home invasion in which a woman was shot in the face with a BB gun.

Surveillance cameras near the home captured the incident, in which the suspects rushed the front door of the North Texas home Tuesday night.

Police said the homeowner was asleep on the couch when the suspects burst through the door. Two were wearing clown masks and all were carrying BB guns.

The 31-year-old single mother of three was shot in the face and arm by the Spanish-speaking assailants. Police said they suspect the male suspects were young teens, 13 or 14 years old, and that they may have had a dispute with the woman's oldest son.

Over the past few months, there have been many incidents across the country, involving "creepy clown" threats and incidents where suspects have worn clown masks.

The vast majority of the clown threats have turned out to be hoaxes and authorities have blamed social media for the spread of the phenomenon.
