FBI: Man Said He Robbed Bank to Escape Living with His Wife

The wife of a slain Baton Rouge police officer says her husband left her with one very special final gift.

Officer Matthew Gerald was one of three officers who were fatally shot on July 17 amid protests over the officer-involved death of Alton Sterling. A fourth officer was seriously injured, and two others were hospitalized. About two weeks after that savage attack, Gerald's wife Dechia learned she was pregnant.

Dechia said her two young daughters somehow knew she was pregnant before anyone else, informing her separately that she'd be having a baby. A pregnancy test confirmed her children's prophecies, as well as her own suspicions. She confided in her family and the wives of other fallen officers.

"I wanted to cry but at the same time, it's kind of exciting but then the flood of knowing all of the firsts that he would miss with that one," Dechia said.

She admitted that she's scared, since her husband was a very hands-on father, but said that she knows there's a higher being watching over her and that everything happens for a reason.

"For the most part, it's a blessing. I mean obviously he left us a very special gift behind, but at the same time, all those days that I get overwhelmed, I ask how am I going to do this by myself without him," she said.

At 10 weeks pregnant, Dechia said she still has a lot of questions but is trusting God to guide her.

"There's no better gift that a husband could leave behind than a baby, a gift from God. There's no better gift than that."

The baby is due in April. A GoFundMe page has been established to help their family.
