A truck carrying 40,000 pounds of blank pennies overturned in Delaware early Wednesday, spilling its payload all over the most traveled interstate on the East Coast, shutting it down.

The tractor trailer collided with a barrier in a construction zone on I-95, causing it to flip and spill thousands and thousands of pennies that were headed to a mint in Philadelphia.

The accident shut down traffic on all northbound lanes while the pennies were cleaned off and the totaled truck was chopped up and towed away. A street sweeper was used for the pennies.

Steve Keeley reported that the truck's fuel tank appeared to rupture and spill gas on the road, making things very slippery. Amazingly, the truck driver was not seriously injured.

Ten hours after the accident, one lane was open and traffic was still backed up for miles.
