McCaul: If Turkey Coup Succeeds, U.S. Partnership With Military Must Continue
Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul joined Special Report to discuss the unfolding military coup in Turkey, saying that if it succeeds, the U.S.'s strong partnership with the Turkish military must continue.
McCaul says the coup looks like a response from the secular military to the Islamist-leaning Erdogan's policies, as well as the Istanbul Ataturk Airport attack and others by ISIS, and Russia's presence in the region.
He said that the U.S. has enjoyed a "very good relationship" with the Turkish military and that the Incirlik airbase has been key in the air campaign against ISIS.
He said that if the coup is successful, it's imperative for the war on terror to maintain Turkey's status as a NATO ally and protect that airbase.
