A Colorado mother fought off a mountain lion that attacked her son on Friday night, according to authorities.

The five-year-old was playing in the front yard of his home in Pitkin County, about 10 miles northwest of Aspen, around 8 p.m. when the attack occurred.

The mother told police she heard screaming and ran outside to find a mountain lion on him.

She said she was able to pull the boy away from the animal after a struggle.

The boy was taken to a local hospital with injuries to his face, head and neck. He was transferred to a hospital in Denver and has been listed in fair condition.

The mother, who sustained minor injuries to her hand and legs, was treated and released in good condition.
