The gunman who opened fire at an Orlando nightclub, killing at least 50 and injuring dozens, reportedly called 911 moments before to pledge allegiance to the leader of ISIS.

California Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told CNN that shooter Omar Mateen pledged allegiance to ISIS and also mentioned the Boston Marathon bombers.

Schiff said the timing of the attack and the targeting of a well-known gay nightclub can’t be a coincidence.

“The fact that this shooting took place during Ramadan and that ISIS leadership in Raqqa has been urging attacks during this time, that the target was an LGBT nightclub during (LGBT) Pride (month) and, if accurate, that according to local law enforcement the shooter declared his allegiance to ISIS, indicates an ISIS-inspired act of terrorism,” Schiff said.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack Sunday afternoon via its Amaq news agency, Fox News reported.

It was not clear, however, if the shooting was actually directed by the terror group or only inspired by it.
