LOOK: This Little Monkey Caused a Nationwide Blackout
Kenyan homes and businesses lost power for more than three hours yesterday and it was all because of this little monkey.
The Kenya Electricity Generation Company (KenGen) shared a photo of the Vervet monkey, a species that is common in the East African nation.
The little guy climbed onto the roof of the Gitaru Power Station, then fell onto a transformer, triggering a chain-reaction overload.
The company explained that it uses electric fencing to keep out wild animals and that it's looking at ways to improve security.
The monkey survived and was handed over to Kenya’s wildlife services. Power was said to have been restored later in the day.
According to the African Wildlife Foundation, Vervet monkeys are viewed as pests in populated areas because they steal food and crops.
