Outrageous 3rd-Grader Barred From Wearing Donald Trump Hat to School
A Fresno, California, third-grader was told by his school principal that he had to remove his "Make America Great Again" Donald Trump hat.
Nine-year-old Logan Autry says Powers-Ginsburg Elementary School officials said he had to take the hat off because it brings "negative emotions" to other children who don't like the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
Logan said that students initially confronted him about the hat, but he refused to remove it.
"They were saying they didn't like Trump. They were saying he was stupid," Logan said. "I had to explain to them what Donald Trump was actually doing."
Logan refused to remove the hat, even after the principal told him to.
On Thursday, he left school early because administrators said the hat was causing a safety concern on campus. They told him to take the hat off and not wear it again at school.
"It's my favorite hat," Logan said. "The First Amendment says I can wear my hat."
"They should be able to let kids freely express themselves without the fear of being beat up or harassed or bullied," Logan's uncle said.
The district released a statement which said:
Our job as educators is to facilitate a safe learning environment where we encourage robust conversations of diverse and thoughts.
We are proud that in this case, our school achieved that goal by allowing the student to wear his hat for several days.
However, it is also our responsibility to take precautions when the discourse begins to impact our school climate and interrupt school operations.
