Meet the Man Behind @RealDonaldTrump on Twitter
With more than 8.5 million Twitter followers, Donald Trump has utilized the social media platform in a way that no other presidential candidate has.
Peter Costanzo, who set up the @realDonaldTrump Twitter account in 2009, explained on "Fox and Friends" that he convinced Trump that social media would be a great way to promote his book "Think Like a Champion" after a seven-minute pitch.
Costanzo revealed that the @DonaldTrump account was already taken. Since this was before Twitter established a verification process, he suggested the billionaire businessman add "real."
Years later, many celebrities and people in the public still use "real" on their Twitter accounts, taking a page from Trump's playbook.
Costanzo said that a huge part of Trump's Twitter success can be attributed to the authentic voice the account has.
He explained that Trump was always heavily involved, even when it was Costanzo or someone else tweeting for him.
As his Twitter following has grown, Trump has become more and more involved, Costanzo said.
"From what I understand, they've really pulled him in, and he's tweeting himself and really involved personally," Costanzo said.
"There are a lot of people that use social media very effectively, but I think he has just raised the bar as far as what can be done."
