Trump said his organization has been vetting each charitable group in recent months before making the large donations.
He said that in the case of one group, Project for Patriots, $100,000 has been earmarked and will be donated once the group provides the required documentation.
The largest contribution of $1.1 million went to the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation.
Trump said that he expects more donations to come through, pushing the amount over $6 million.
He defended his decision to announce the donations in a news conference by saying that he was left with no choice due to "false" stories by the media about the contributions.
"I wasn't looking for the credit, but I had no choice but to do this because the press was saying I didn't raise any money," said Trump.
