The family of a boy with dwarfism is sharing a heartwarming story of the incredible bond forged between their son and his newly-adopted dog.

Quaden Bayles suffers from achondroplasia - the most common form of dwarfism - but his spirits have been lifted immeasurably by Buddy, a 9-year-old shih tzu who suffers from the same condition.

The Brisbane, Australia family says Buddy has helped 5-year-old Quayden deal with his condition and with the recent passing of his grandfather.

His mother, Yarraka Bayles, told Buzzfeed News that her son has been the victim of cruel taunts by strangers and became ashamed of the way he looks.

Quayden has also had to endure several life-threatening surgeries.

"This has lifted his confidence so much and he is not ashamed to tell people 'Buddy's got dwarfism like me,'" she said. "Before we couldn’t even mention the word dwarfism; now Quaden is so proud to tell everyone about himself and Buddy having the same thing."

Bayles said that her son is learning to accept his condition and is realizing, with Buddy's help, that it's OK to be different.
