A North Carolina mother was arrested, kept in custody for hours and charged with child abuse for letting her 11-year-old son drive a golf cart.

Julie Mall, from Charlotte, was on vacation on Bald Head Island with her husband and children, and she let her son drive them back from the beach to their rental home.

An officer spotted the underage driver and confronted the family.

Mall told the Charlotte Observer that she admitted she was wrong and was aware that the legal age for driving a golf cart on the vacation island - which doesn't allow cars - is 16.

She says the officer was extremely aggressive, repeatedly accusing her of being drunk.

The situation escalated until the 5-foot-4, 125-pound mom ended up being pinned to the ground by the officer with a knee to her back.

She was handcuffed and taken off the island on a ferry to be booked, and ended up spending more than four hours in police custody.

She was charged with resisting a public officer and misdemeanor child abuse.

According to Officer James Hunter's arrest report, Mall was drunk and unruly.

The case was ultimately dismissed after Hunter failed to show up for two court dates, though charges could be brought again until July 2017.

The incident occurred last summer, but video of the arrest, captured by Mall's husband, Scott, is only now being released.
