U.S. officials confirmed this morning that a Navy SEAL has been killed fighting ISIS in northern Iraq.

The service member, who was serving as an adviser to Kurdish forces, was shot and killed by small arms fire north of Mosul.

It's the third American soldier killed in the battle against ISIS since October, Benjamin Hall reported on Happening Now.

Kurdish troops have been amassing in and near Mosul, getting ready to retake the city from ISIS with the support of U.S. air power, artillery and special forces.

ISIS fighters attacked with truck bombs and infantry today, penetrating the Kurds' front lines, Hall said.

The Pentagon said the SEAL was not killed on the "front lines," but Hall said the line between providing assistance and being in combat has become blurred.
