Trump Wins Indiana GOP Primary, Fox News Projects
Fox News projects that Donald Trump will win the Indiana GOP primary.
The New York real estate mogul fended off a defeat by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who in recent weeks had stepped up his rhetoric against the front-runner.
The victory significantly improves Trump’s chances of amassing the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the Republican presidential nomination this summer in Cleveland.
With just nine states remaining in the nominating process, the stop-Trump wing of the Republican Party may be rapidly running out of options, analysts say.
Update, 7:15 pm ET: “Ted Cruz could not have done worse in this state if he had planned it,” John Roberts reported from Cruz’s headquarters in Indianapolis minutes after the results were announced.
He noted the senator’s coordinated efforts in the days leading up to today’s primary, including teaming up with John Kasich, announcing Carly Fiorina as his running mate, and even picking up an endorsement from Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.
Many had seen Indiana as “a firewall” for Cruz, leading his performance in this primary to raise questions on whether there is still a clear path forward, Roberts reported.
