Keane: It's a 'Myth' for Obama to Say Terrorists Use Gitmo for Propaganda
President Obama plans to close Guantanamo Bay during the final months of his presidency, arguing that it is a waste of money and continues to be used as a propaganda tool by terrorists.
Gen. Jack Keane (Ret.) said on "America's Newsroom" today that closing Gitmo is a bad idea because the world and the threat of terrorism have both changed so dramatically in recent years.
"Radical Islam is morphing into a global jihad. It's on the rise," Keane said.
He argued that the U.S. must have some special place to hold documented terrorists, since they don't qualify as POWs. He explained that because they're not representing a nation or state, they don't qualify for our judicial system.
"Are we just going to walk away from our responsibilities to detain people who are actual terrorists?" Keane asked. "That's irresponsibility. The facts have changed. That is really the issue here."
He added it's a "myth" that terrorists use the detention center as a propaganda tool, saying that may have been true at one time, but it's simply not the issue we're facing today.
